How To Put On And Fit a Horse Head Collar

Approach the horse towards the shoulder, (this is so you do not get kicked or run over).

Speak to your horse so he knows you are there.

I always offer my horse a treat but you will need to decide if this is a safe thing to do. You do not want to cause jealousy with other horses or encourage your horse to bite.

Place the rope over your horse’s neck so you have control.

Put the headcollar over your horse’s nose and put the headpiece over your horse’s head just behind the ears.

Do up the buckle or clip and straighten the headcollar.

The nose band should fit 2 fingers below the projecting cheek bone, and there should be a 2 fingers gap between his nose and the headcollar nose band.

To Remove the Headcollar

Undo the buckle or clip on the headcollar.

Slide the headcollar off gently.

Walk away from your horse by walking away from the shoulder, not by going in front or behind.

Final Thoughts

The headcollar is what your horse will be wearing for the majority of the time he is with you.

As a result, you must make sure that it is safely fitted and as comfy as possible, to ensure his time with you is as good as it can be.
