HOW TO CREATE A MUCK HEAP

A muck heap should be positioned on the outside of the yard on the side furthest away from the prevailing wind, but close enough to be practical to get wheelbarrows to easily. The tractor must be able to access it, if this is how you wish to remove it.

There should be three sections: the current one being used, a rotting pile and the rotted pile that is currently being removed.

Each section should have solid walls, ideally with air vents to aid decomposition. The area must be closed off so, if a horse escapes, it does not risk going on the muck heap and getting stuck, this is because it becomes very soft as it rots.

I form a gradual ramp going up and tip the new manure off the end.

Each day the muck heap must be forked up to stop it spreading and then trodden down. This makes the rotting process a lot quicker.

Final Thoughts

It is important that you keep your muck heap well maintained, and stack it up daily. This is because, if left, the muck heap has a terrible habit of extending all over the yard!
