It is important to have some sort of system in place so you can keep an eye on your horse’s ideal weight. This chart on how you would class your horse is with thanks to-
” AB Physiotherapy for horse and riders”.
A score of between 2 and 3 is ideal.
As a riding centre all our horses are inspected every year and a fat score written down, although I do check the horses every day and any loss of weight is noted straight away.
There are many weight tapes that you can get to estimate his weight, but the best way is to get him weighed. Many shows will do this or at the vets.
If you do not have this luxury then a very rough guide is- heart girth (measure his barrel just behind his elbow in inches) x heart girth x length of the horse (from point of shoulder to back of haunch) then divide this number by 660. This gives you his approximate weight in kgs.
Final Thoughts
If you notice any unexplained changes it is best to get your vet’s opinion.
Being vigilant could save you and your horse a lot of pain and heartache.
